I've also had my share of problems with Linux however what a great oppotunity we have to use a completely free operating system that is given to all of us by a generous group of developers who spend their free time creating a platform for the rest of us and in many cases having to write code for hardware without any hardware specifications.

Sure every Linux distrubution has issues but considering it doesn't cost us anything can we really complain? From my experience, Ubuntu (Gnome) has been the easiest and most consistent installation that I've used from all Linux distributions with my limited knowledge of the ins and outs of the OS and is in my opinion the best option for a newcomer to Linux from other platforms like Windows XP.

Béranger: Ubuntu and Kubuntu are about the same as cats and dogs (or, more accurately, Gnome and KDE ;). While Ubuntu and Kubuntu share the same kernel, GNU apps, X, etc., Ubuntu does not have Kaffeine, Konqueror, Kwin (nor ANY of the KDE apps) installed by default and its Feisty (which I am typing from right now) plays OGG files just fine without crashing :)

BTW, it has been argued that Kubuntu is not the best KDE distro out there; PCLinuxOS and openSUSE are often suggested as alternatives by KDE-fans.

But as far as Gnome distros go, Ubuntu is king of the hill :)

Yeah?! Try playing an .OGG file in Kaffeine in Kubuntu 7.04 Beta -- it's the KDE version, yet still the same Ubuntu, right? Your X should crash -- not Konqueror, not KWin, but the whole X server.

Don't rush into saying "the best OS" that easy!
