This is a question I hear all too often. Website owners seem to be under the impression that just having a website and driving traffic to it will instantly produce millions of dollars in sales.
Unfortunately I’m going to have to burst your bubble because that just isn’t the case. Websites just don’t instantly convert traffic into sales even if you are throwing thousands of dollars into advertising and traffic generation techniques.
So what’s the answer then? Well firstly you need to measure your current websites performance with some online tracking tools. This will then provide a benchmark for you to measure gains or losses against. Then you need to try variations or split testing in your landing pages, like changing the heading, images, page copy, call to actions etc, then test it using metrics from your tracking tools. From monitoring variations in your landing pages, you should then be able to see which variations are providing better conversions rates, therefore increasing your bottom line and return on investment.
You can get a number of software packages to help you gather the statistics of your split testing or if your using Google’s Adwords to drive traffic to your site, you could apply for Google’s Website Optimizer which is currently in Beta testing.
One final note is that this all takes time, monitoring, tweaking and tracking so have some patience and be dilegent in your tracking.
