Microsoft Vista or Linux? Is Linux ready for the Challenge?
A good friend of mine is soon migrating from Windows XP to Vista but this has been an issue because the laptop he owns isn’t going to cut it with Vista unless you stick with the basic version… yeh right!
According to the Microsoft website you will need to the the following minimum requirements for Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate editions
- 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
- 1 GB of system memory
- 40 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
- Support for DirectX 9 graphics with:
- WDDM Driver
- 128 MB of graphics memory (minimum)
- Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware
- 32 bits per pixel
- DVD-ROM drive
- Audio Output
- Internet access (fees may apply)
Unfortunately there are going to be alot of people out there who get a rude shock when they find they are going to either have to spend money upgrading their computer system or buying a new PC with new gear capable of handling Microsofts new operating system.
I have a couple of computers that aren’t going to cut it for Vista so I’ve decided to switch one of them to Linux. Linux is a free OS but it isn’t quite as simple to install and have your computer running as Windows has been. I’m sure they’ll be plenty of Linux guru’s who may argue the point but as a new comer to Linux I have found it somewhat of a pain.
So why the switch to Linux? Well I have both PC and Mac so I use my Mac for most of the things I need to do but I still use Windows for other tasks that I don’t have on my Mac. I don’t want to pay what I think are pretty exorbitant prices for Vista so Linux is the obviously solution as a Windows alternative to computers that aren’t a Mac.
So as I speak my laptop is getting a shiny new Ubuntu Linux OS completing overwriting a what was a dual boot Win XP and Suse Linux setup. So this laptop of mine will be my first Linux only computer which I’ll post more information on my blog about my Linux journey.
As for my friend migrating to Vista… he just spend $3000 on a new system.
